How to Build a Klaviyo Unengaged Segment (and Why It Saves Your Open Rate)

The exact Klaviyo unengaged segment rule we use for 2,000+ stores. Suppress dead weight, lift open rates 10-20 points, and cut your Klaviyo bill.

What a Klaviyo Unengaged Segment Actually Is

A Klaviyo unengaged segment is a group of profiles who have received your emails but never opened them. Simple definition, massive impact.

Every Shopify store ends up with these profiles. Someone signs up for a discount, takes the code, never engages again. Multiply by 10,000 and you have a deliverability problem.

Data from 2,000+ stores we work with shows unengaged profiles make up 15 to 30% of the average Klaviyo list. If you have 50,000 profiles, 10,000 to 15,000 of them are dragging your open rate down.

Why the Klaviyo Unengaged Segment Protects Your Open Rate

Mailbox providers (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail) watch one number harder than any other: your open rate.

Open rate under 15%? Gmail pushes you to Promotions. Under 10%? Straight to spam. This is the mechanic that kills email programs quietly.

The moment you suppress unengaged profiles, three things happen:

  • Your open rate jumps 10 to 20 points overnight
  • Your Klaviyo bill drops because you pay for active profiles
  • Your next send reaches more real inboxes, not spam folders

This is the single highest-ROI change you can make in Klaviyo in under 5 minutes.

How to Build a Klaviyo Unengaged Segment in 2 Minutes

Open Klaviyo. Go to Audience, then Lists and Segments, then Create Segment. Name it Unengaged (Suppress).

The Exact Rule Set

Use these two conditions joined with AND:

  1. What someone has done (or not done): received email at least 5 times over all time
  2. AND what someone has done (or not done): opened email 0 times over all time

Save the segment. Klaviyo builds the list automatically. Come back in 15 minutes and you have your unengaged profiles.

Why Received 5 Times Instead of Fewer

One or two missed opens is not a pattern. Five is.

If someone received 5 emails and opened exactly 0, they are not reading. Raising the threshold to 10 loses revenue (some people do re-engage). Lowering it to 2 includes people who were just on vacation.

Five is the sweet spot across every account we have tuned.

How to Suppress the Klaviyo Unengaged Segment Safely

You have two options in Klaviyo: suppress or delete. Different use cases.

Option 1: Suppress (Recommended for Most Stores)

Suppressed profiles stay in your account but no longer receive any emails. You can re-activate them later if they show re-engagement.

  1. Open the unengaged segment
  2. Click Manage Segment, then Bulk Actions
  3. Select Suppress Profiles
  4. Confirm

Profiles are suppressed within minutes. Your next campaign excludes them automatically.

Option 2: Delete (Only If You Want to Cut Your Bill)

Deleting removes profiles from your account entirely and you stop paying for them. Use this if you have a big unengaged segment and you are cost-conscious.

Warning: deleted profiles cannot be recovered. Suppress first, delete only if you are sure.

The Sunset Flow: A Smarter Alternative to Straight Suppression

Before you suppress, some profiles deserve one last shot. A sunset flow is a 2 to 3 email sequence that tries to re-engage unengaged profiles before dropping them.

Build this flow in Klaviyo:

  1. Email 1: We miss you with your strongest offer (like 20% off)
  2. Wait 3 days
  3. Email 2: Last chance reminder, same offer, shorter copy
  4. Wait 3 days
  5. Auto-suppress anyone who still did not open

Expect 5 to 15% re-engagement. That is pure recovered revenue from a list you were about to throw away.

How Often to Clean the Klaviyo Unengaged Segment

Every 60 to 90 days. No exceptions.

For stores under 20,000 profiles, quarterly is fine. For stores over 50,000 profiles, monthly cleaning keeps deliverability stable year-round.

Set a recurring calendar event. Suppress on schedule. Never let the segment get above 15% of your total list.

What Happens After You Suppress (The First 7 Days)

Expect these changes within a week:

  • Open rate lifts by 10 to 20 points across campaigns and flows
  • Click rate rises because the remaining list actually engages
  • Revenue per email goes up (smaller list, better quality)
  • Monthly Klaviyo bill drops by the percentage of profiles you suppressed

We have run this play on 2,000+ accounts. Same result every time.

The One-Line Takeaway

Build the unengaged segment, suppress it, repeat every 90 days. This single action is worth more than any subject line test you will ever run.
